Make Your Own
Miniature Printable Stand Up
Making your own miniature Printables is easier than you think -
Printables are cheap to make, only require a printer, a little time, a
graphics program, an idea, and the most rudimentary tools The rest
can be found around your house or on the Internet.
The first step is to become acquainted with your graphics program --
almost every computer comes with some kind of graphic program and most
of these will do everything needed to make a printable. Erase and
replace colors are two of the most important, although clone is nice
also.
Your Printables can be as simple or as elaborate as you wish - as these
are for your enjoyment.
I'm going to make a "Stand Up" display for this tutorial. Stand up
are used for advertising almost anything. They have been used
for years to make P.O.P. (point of purchase) displays for products.
This is also a great way to make miniature collectibles of movie and TV stars.

Choosing The
Subject
I've decided to do a stand up of Frankenstein's Monster --
the first
step is to find a picture that I want to make into the stand up.
Searching Google Images is one of the best methods I know of.
It's best to search for a large size image, as that will give
you the best results. This photo is an advertising still
from the 1930's and therefore is public domain. |
 |
What I did
With my graphics program I used "color replace" and
"erase" to remove the surrounding color -- I then used
"Clone" to take out the text across his chest. I used
the "draw" command to add a better stand. I left
the color between the legs, as that will hide the stand.
The best way to learn how to do this is to experiment with your
graphics program. The more you play with it the more you
learn. Always remember that under the edit key on most
graphics program is an "undo" key, which undoes the last
thing you did -- I use it more than any other option.
That's all it takes. |

An Even
Easier Way
It is real easy to make a printable - and as you see it
doesn't take a great deal of effort.
An even easier way is to make a printable is to find it on the
internet. Look for exactly what you want, and more often
than not you'll find what your are looking for.
I found this stand up
on
AllPosters.com
and simply copied it. As long as your using the item for
your own personal use there isn't a problem - just don't try to
sell them without getting written permission first.
All that needs to be done with this picture is to print it on
heavy paper (110 lb is best) - cut it out and attach the stand,
and you're done. You don't even need to resize this
picture as it is already ~1/12th scale. |
 |
The Stand
This stand should fit most full figure stand ups. If it
doesn't - you can always open it in your graphics program and
"resize" it.
Fold the Blue lines and Cut the
Black lines. Fold down the three large support taps and
insert the small tabs through the cutouts and fold over.
Glue the tabs and let dry.
After the glue has dried attach it to the back of the picture
you want to stand up. |

An Icon in
Advertising History - The Original Coppertone Girl
1/6th, 1/12th,
1/24th, & 1/48th
Scale
The Coppertone Girl was created by Joyce Ballantyne in 1959,
as an advertisement for Schering-Plough HealthCare Products Inc.
The ad shows a young blonde girl with pigtails in shock as a
Scottish Terrier puppy sneaks up behind her and pulls down her
blue swimsuit bottoms, exposing her pale white derriere in stark
contrast to her tanned body. Accompanying this ad was the impish
slogan, "Don't be a paleface!" |
